Electric ship revolution is definitely going to kick start by the end of this decade. Even though three fourths of the ocean going ships at present are partially electric as they use diesel- electric transmission systems. Electricity generated using diesel generators is used to move the ship’s propeller which helps to save fuel to a certain extent. It still falls short of being called a hybrid system. In future non rechargeable electric batteries could be replaced by cleaner alternatives like rechargeable batteries, LNG, solar power etc. International Organisations are going to play a key role in initiating the electric ship revolution. With increased natural disasters resulting from increased pollution world organisations are going to push countries to take up the green shipping challenge . Increased funding to research cheaper alternatives to generate shipping electricity will make a huge impact on this industry.
